RATHMINES U3A

The University of the Third Age (U3A) started in France in the 1970s and now has branches throughout Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Cyprus , South Africa and China.

The basic function and role of the U3A is to provide lifelong learning opportunities for older adults, to enable them to meet socially to share common interests, enjoy a range of activities and enhance their well-being and quality of their lives.

In Ireland U3A operates under the aegis of Age Action Ireland. There are now over 30 branches throughout the country. Each branch is autonomous and is run entirely by volunteers drawn from among the membership.

Rathmines U3A

The Rathmines Branch was founded in 2017 by Ann O'Neill. It has grown over the years and now has a membership of nearly 50.

U3A Monthly Meetings

The monthly meetings of the full membership are addressed by speakers on a wide range of topics of interest such as history, literature, philosophy etc. These meetings are held in the Public Library in Rathmines in the upstairs Exhibition Room. The list of events on the website is subject to change due to circumstances outside our control.

Executive Committee

An Executive Committee of no more than 5, elected by the members, manages and organises the business and activities of the Branch, as well as its finances. It holds at least 4 ordinary meetings during the year. The Committee prepares and submits to the AGM, usually held in September, an Annual Report on Income and Expenditure, covering items such as insurance, bank fees and book tokens for speakers.

At the AGM, the Chair presents an Annual Report on the year’s activities covering the lectures given by invited speakers, outings to cultural institutions, visits to the cinema and plans for the following year.

Annual General Meeting (AGM)

The AGM is open to all members, but only paid members are entitled to take part at the AGM, stand for election, propose motions, and vote on membership of the Executive Committee. The membership fee is also decided by the AGM.
